A Skier's Journey

Caught up in the swirl of a busy modern existence, many of us find ourselves looking back and wondering “What would have happened if…?”

Of course, there’s no real way of knowing what kind of life pursuing a dream might bring, or what the costs and rewards might have been. The closest we can come is to experience it vicariously through someone who doggedly lived their own—and through that realize that perhaps some of our dreams are still within reach.

With imagery of the world’s most storied mountain ranges as a backdrop, Chad Sayers engages audiences with a visual journey through his own dream-come-true. From a youth spent fantasizing about skiing to the life of a professional freeskier where success brought celebrity, sponsorship, travel, and freedom. There was no denying the many benefits of living in this spotlight, but there was also no denying the price: living his dream was also a treadmill of daily risk and peril that eventually set Sayers adrift from family, friends, lovers—even himself. Somewhere, he crossed a line of solitude that only made sense in front of a camera. But as injuries and others traumas piled up, the only path to survival was to walk away from even that. Embarking on a journey of mental and physical healing, the path eventually led Sayers back to the mountains, where he found his dream was very much still alive.

The talk addresses universal themes of goal-setting and sacrifice, risk and reward, emotional and physical cost, overcoming adversity, and embracing beauty and solitude.

Traveller

What does it really mean to travel—to journey, to sojourn, to immerse oneself in the experience of an alien landscape and a foreign culture? There are probably as many answers as there are travellers. But one thing is clear to all: travel does have meaning.

In this talk, Chad Sayers brings the audience into his own travel world. The motivation and expectation, the why and how of living low to the ground in some instances, or a castle on a hill in others. Whether you’re a surfer or sunbather, what does being someplace actually demand of us and what can we take away? What are the highs, lows and requisite protocols for a photographer capturing other people’s realities?

From Hawaii, Indonesia, Central America, China and Easter Island to Iran, Kashmir, Eastern Europe, Morocco, and the Arctic, Sayers addresses how travel informed his life, touching on themes of expanded world view, learning, cultural respect and navigating the privilege and responsibility of travel.
